12 VDC Air Conditioner
The Marvair 12 VDC air conditioner is designed to operate directly from a 12 volt DC power supply - an inverter is not required. The unit has a nominal cooling capacity of 5,000 BTUH and is ideal for sailboats, powerboats or any place cooling is desired. The air conditioner including a small circulating pump draws a nominal 30 amp. The unit can be operated directly from batteries and can be used dockside with a suitable battery charger.
Rather than using a conventional AC compressor, the Marvair 12 VDC unit uses a unique brushless DC motor for the compressor motor. This permits the unit to operate directly from DC power and eliminates the need for an inverter.
There are several advantages to using the brushless DC motor. Conventional AC compressors have a surge or spike on each startup that is typically 5 to 6 times the running amps. In order to provide the amperage for start-up, the inverter must be sized significantly larger than what is required for the normal running current. In addition to increased cost, oversizing the inverter dramatically decreases its conversion efficiency. This loss of efficiency is directly converted to heat, adding to the cooling requirement in the cabin.
The Marvair 12 VDC unit has a single inlet centrifugal blower to deliver the cooled air quietly and efficiently and can be used with duct work and a grille.
To protect the unit during adverse conditions, the Marvair unit has low and high voltage protection, over current protection, locked rotor protection and polarity protection. Other standard features include an insulated condensate pan to prevent sweating, a corrosion protected evaporator coil and a stainless steel base pan.
The unit is controlled by a conventional 12 volt thermostat and uses the environmentally friendly, non-ozone depleting R-134a refrigerant. R-134a is non-flammable, has an A1 safety classification by ASHRAE and is listed on the EPA on their SNAP list.
Accessories include a thermostat and a 12 VDC pump.
